Obiettivi formativi

The Hygiene, VIS and epidemiology for the environment module is carried out in two teaching units:

Environmental Epidemiology provides descriptive epidemiology tools for the study of the frequency distribution of biological phenomena in nature and analytical epidemiology tools for the study and assessment of environmental disease risks.

Hygiene and VIS for the environment analyzes the relationships between the quality of living environments and human health and provides notions on the techniques of monitoring and biomonitoring in the environment with preventive purposes. Molecular epidemiology tools are provided and biomarkers in the human field are described as well as the main methods of monitoring in the environment ranging from health impact assessment (VIS) through the risk analysis procedure to biomonitoring through the use of tests in vitro, useful for the biological characterization of environmental matrices. The student will be able to analyze different health problems related to exposure in life environments, both natural and man-made and to evaluate monitoring activities in suitable environments.

JUDGEMENTS SKILLS

Students will be able to formulate judgments and choose the best environmental and biological monitoring strategies and to implement, by harmonizing them, the most effective actions in preventive and conservative. At the same time, the most suitable intervention strategies in the environment for the promotion of human health and the protection of the environment itself can be promoted, also in terms of dissemination. The autonomy of judgment acquired will be assessed by inviting students to participate in discussions on case studies analyzed, taken from scientific literature and current events, during the training activities of the modules.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Students will be able to communicate the issues of the relationship between man and the environment and the results of studies concerning monitoring and biomonitoring in the environment as well as within the international scientific community also in popular terms. For this purpose, the didactic activities of case-study analysis or seminars organized during the teaching modules will allow students to practically get to know the contents and communication techniques of experts from the world of research and work and to apply them directly.

The exam test during the official appeals consists of multiple choice tests and/or open-ended tests for each teaching module: Environmental Epidemiology and Hygiene and VIS for the environment.

In addition, for the module Hygiene and VIS for the environment during lectures students will face

- an oral test consisting of a presentation in classroom (workshop), concerning the topics included in the program of the teaching module, prepared mainly using articles from international scientific literature in order to understand environmental and biomonitoring issues from a preventive point of view and

- a written test concerning a risk analysis.

These activities will be evaluated and mediated with the written test that will be carried out during the official exam sessions (if the two activities are not carried out, an oral exam will be required after the written test).

For the Environmental Epidemiology module it will be possible to organize ongoing tests.
