Biometry. The Biometry module consists of four subunits. Each subunits integrate the theory of statistics with the practice of statistics through a collection of case studies, that allow students to learn and apply the statistical tests to real biological problems using statistical software.

Unit 1: Introduction to biometry. Descriptive statistics: Indicators of position, dispersion and shape. Inferential statistics: null and alternative hypotheses. One-tailed and two-tailed tests. Type I and Type II statistical errors. The power of a statistical test. Main type of distribution functions: normal, t-student, poisson and binomial distributions. Computation of confidence intervals. Goodness-of-fit tests: chi-square, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, binomial test.

Unit 2: Comparison between two samples. F-FISHER test for homoscedasticity of samples. Parametric tests: t-student for dependent and independent samples. Non parametric tests for independent samples (Mann-Whitney) and paired samples (Wilcoxon).

Unit 3. The Analysis of Variance. Fixed and random factors. Non-parametric ANOVA (Kruskal-Wallis). Post-hoc tests.

Unit 4. Tests for between-variable independency. Correlation coefficients (Pearson’s R e Spearman’s). Analysis of covariance. Verification of the normality and homoscedasticity assumptions. Data transformation.
