MASTER DEGREE IN CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
LAUREA MAGISTRALE IN BIOLOGIA CELLULARE E MOLECOLARE

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A.A. 2015-16


For admission to the Master’s Degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology - Biologia Cellularee  Molecolare, candidates must possess:

1. A Bachelor Degree’s (a three-year first level degree) achieved in Italy (DM 509; DM 270) or another qualification obtained from a foreign Universisty and recognized as satisfactory by the Master’s Admission Committee. Candidates that does not hold yet a Bachelor’s Degree at the date of the Admission test, but that are enrolled in the third year of a Bachelor’s Degree course in the academic year 2014-15 and are about to graduate within December 2015, can submit their application.

2. Candidates holding a Bachelor Degree’s obtained in Italy other than L13-Biological Sciences and L2-Biotechnology, must possess at least n. 60 credits in one or more of the following scientific areas (SSD): BIO/01, BIO/02, BIO/03, BIO/04, BIO/05, BIO/06, BIO/07, BIO/09, BIO/10, BIO/11, BIO/12, BIO/14, BIO/16, BIO/18, BIO/19, CHIM/01, CHIM/02, CHIM/03, CHIM/06, FIS/01-08, MAT/01-09, INF/01, ING-INF/05, MED/04, MED/42.

3. An adequate academic background (see Syllabus). This requirement will be verified through the Admission test, consisting in a written test (multiple choice questions) followed by an interview with the Master’s Admission Committee. (Here you can view and try an example of the written test)

Syllabus. Knowledge in the following subjects will be assessed in the Admission test.

Anatomy and Physiology: Structures and functions of the cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, excretory, genital endocrine and nervous systems.

Biochemistry: Structure and function of proteins (allosteric regulation). Enzymes: basic concepts and mechanisms of enzymatic catalysis. Principles of bioenergetics and metabolic pathways. Basic methods for purification and characterization of proteins.

Cell Biology: Principles of cell communication and signal transduction. Regulation of the cell cycle. Apoptosis. Protein trafficking. Basic cell culture techniques.

Cytology and Histology: Structures and functions of eukaryotic cell (plasma membrane, organelles, mitosis, meiosis). General characteristics and functions of the main tissues (epithelial, connective, muscular, nervous) .Histological techniques.

English Language: Common European Framework (CEF) B1 level.

Laboratory skills: Preparation of solutions. Basic knowledge of methods for solution and dilution. Notions of laboratory safety.

Microbiology: Structuress and functions of the prokaryotic cell, microbial metabolism, microbial growth, microbial genetics, basic knowledge of methods for cultivation and identification of bacteria.

Molecular Biology and Genetics: DNA and RNA structures. Structure of genomes. Replication, mutation and DNA repair. Transcription, RNA processing and protein synthesis. Principles of gene expression regulation. Basic recombinant DNA techniques. Genetic recombination and heredity. Fundamentals of population genetics. Basic knowledge of bioinformatics tools.

HOW TO ENROLL FOR THE ADMISSION TEST


Submit the application for curricular check online at www.unito.it and upload a self-declaration that testifies to the student’s Bachelor’s Degree certificate with disciplines (for graduates), or to the student’s study programme with disciplines, the relative university credits, the scientific disciplinary sector (SSD), and marks (in the case of those about to graduate). Please note:

- UniTO candidates: login at the UniTo website, click on the menu "Registration" ("Iscrizioni") and then "Test assessment" ("Test di valutazione");

- Graduates/about to graduate candidates from other Italian Universities: first register at the portal of the University of Torino as Future student, then, after the first access, click on the menu "Registration" ("Iscrizioni" and then "Test assessement" ("Test di valutazione").

After the evaluation of the submitted documents, candidates in possession of the admission requirements 1 and 2 will be admitted to the test for assessment of their  academic background (Admission test).

ADMISSIONS FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2015-2016

The first session of admission for enrollment in the Master’s Degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology in the Academic Year 2015-16, will be held on September 10th, 2015, 2.00 pm, Department of Life Sciences and Systems Biology, Morphological Laboratory, 1st Floor, Via Accademia Albertina 13, Turin.

Candidates who wish to attend the Admission test of September 10th, 2015 must submit online at www.unito.it the application for curricular check and upload the required documents (as described above) starting from July 1st, 2015 unti September 4th, 2015.

A second session of admission valid for the Academic Year 2015-16, will be held on  December 14th, 2015, 2.00 pm, Department of Life Sciences and Systems Biology, Morphological Laboratory, 1st Floor, Via Accademia Albertina 13, Turin.

Candidates who wish to attend the Admission test of December 14th, 2015 must submit online at www.unito.it the application for curricular check and upload the required documents (as described above) starting from October 1st, 2015 until December 9th, 2015.

Foreign students, please contact the Managers’ Office (elena.mazzi@unito.it) to submit their application and upload their documents and curriculum vitae.

Based on the evaluation of candidate’s curriculum studiorum of candidates, as well as of the result of the Admission test, the Master’s Admission Committee will formulate a judgment of ‘admission’ /’non-admission’.

Candidates who will achieve an ‘admission’ judgment, must enroll online at www.unito.it and then submit the required registration application to the Student Secretariat together with the receipt of fee payment.
