Cenni sull' origine delle piante vascolari. Le diverse teorie; Coevoluzione con I funghi. I tempi dell’evoluzione.
Adattamenti agli stress (acqua, freddo, caldo, stress ossidativi). Stress biotici ed abiotici. Le piante e l’uomo: l’addomesticazione.

ESERCITAZIONI SU AMIDO: DALLA MORFOLOGIA ALLA QUANTIFICAZIONE
ESERCITAZIONI SU MICROSCOPIO ELETRONICO E CONFOCALE

An introduction to the origin of land plants . Theories and models; fossils and molecular evolution; dating  the origin of the major plant taxa; Plant and fungal co-evolution.
The plant genome as a tool to unravel the evolution of land plants; the nucleus as the major deposit of genetic information. How to describe the nuclear structure under light, confocal and electron microscopy. The different patterns of organization: Chromatin, heterochomatin, metilation. The regulation of gene expression. The omics approaches: genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics.
The genome sequencing projects: Some details on the most important plants so far sequenced: from Physcomitrella to Arabidopsis, rice, poplar and grapewine. The plant genome is a puzzle of diverse genomes: mitochondria and plastids. Horizontal gene trasnfer can explain gene moviments from organelles to the nuclei. How the sequencing data allow us to build up phylogenetic trees. The transition from the gamethophytic to the sporophytiic phase is one of the most crucial events during plant evolution.
The investigation of Plant organs provides information  on the balance between evolution and adaptation: lessons from roots, shoots and leaves. Meristems: at the core of plant differentiation.  The transition from the first to the secondary structure reveals  the recruitment of previous existing mechanisms.  How the plants survive to environmental  stresses (water, cold, heat, oxidative  stresses)  as well as to the biotic ones. Plants and man: the domestication process
